Adult Women With ADD Face Daily Challenges

Adult women who suffer from ADHD have daily challenges. Many doctors believe that ADD is a disorder only affecting boys and men. In addition, many ADD symptoms in women vary with hormones, and become more evident during puberty, and then again when estrogen decreases during PMS or perimenopause.

Symptoms

Women who suffer from adult ADD tend to be impatient, easily irritated and impulsive. They tend to jump into projects without planning or taking time to think about them things like careers and relationships. Many of them have a high level of sensitivity to rejection, which makes it hard to handle actual or perceived rejection. They are more likely than women with ADD to engage in risky behavior such as early sex or casual sexual relations. They might also have multiple partners, unprotected pregnancy, or multiple partners. Depression is often a co-existing disorder or is a result of ADD, and must also be treated. ADD symptoms are more evident in girls who are puberty during PMS and as estrogen levels drop during menopausal or perimenopausal.

Diagnosis

Doctors can miss diagnosing ADD in women because they believe it is more common in males.  adhd in older women  with ADD tend to be more emotional especially during puberty, PMS, and in perimenopause and menopause as hormone levels change. They may be impulsive, rushing into things without planning. Depression often coexists with or is a consequence of the disorder.
